DC Approves Marriage Equality Dec 15 09

COLAGE applauds today's vote in our nation's capital extending marriage to LGBT couples. Today's outcome follows a similarly decisive council vote earlier this month.

Alison Delpercio, the COLAGE Metro DC Coordinator was one of the individual's whose testimony at the hearing for this bill led to this decisive win. You can watch a video of her compelling speech on behalf of people with LGBTQ parents by clicking HERE.

"Today, the DC City Council decided to take an important step forward in extending equal rights and recognition to all families. At COLAGE, we know that children thrive when their parents and families are reflected and respected by society. Marriage equality in DC helps affirm that respect not only in the nation's capital but across the country by sending a message of fairness and equal rights," commented Beth Teper, COLAGE Executive Director.

Now, Mayor Adrian Fenty, who has pledged to sign the bill, has 10 days to act. Once signed, Congress will have 30 legislative days to review it. If you live in the capital area join the community for tonight's victory party at the Long View Gallery (1302 9th Street, NW) from 7:30pm-10pm.
