Federal Case Against Prop 8 Begins, COLAGE Joins Sunrise Vigil for Marriage Equality Jan 11 10

People with LGBTQ parents this morning bore witness at a sunrise vigil in front of the 9th Circuit Federal Court Building in San Fransisco this morning. The 2-hour vigil started in darkness at 6:30am with community members holding candles and signs reading 'Everyone Deserves the Freedom to Marry' and 'I DO Support Marriage Equality'.

Chiah Connolly-Ingram, COLAGE's Spring Intern, was among the speakers, which included local faith leaders, couples - those who married in 2008 and those who are unable to marry since Prop 8 passed, straight allies, lawyers, and even Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

According to Chiah Connolly-Ingram, 21, the daughter of lesbian moms:

"As an adopted daughter of two lesbians I am directly affected by any decision that is made in the upcoming trial. I can either be recognized as having a legitimate family - one that will be recognized by law and by the general public. Or my family can be denied access to the hundreds of rights that other married couples have. As the daughter of lesbian moms and as a member of COLAGE, I know that children are affected by this decision. I and millions of others like me with LGBTQ parents know first hand what it feels like to be ridiculed and made fun of because my family is different. Marriage equality is a step in the right direction for children, youth and families. While I may not be gay myself, I grew up with lesbian moms and this decision directly impacts my family. I ask the court to ensure that my family be afforded the rights, recognition and respect that every family deserves."

When COLAGErs are moved to speak up, we are powerful advocates on behalf of ourselves and our LGBTQ families. COLAGE community members and staff have a unique voice, because we remind the world that LGBTQ equality isn’t just about LGBTQ people. COLAGErs offer important perspectives on issues like marriage equality and keeping schools safe – because those issues affect us directly.

The Federal trial, which will decide the legality of Proposition 8, began shortly after the vigil. For trial updates, visit the National Center for Lesbian Rights Blog. COLAGE is proud of our members and partners, who continue the important work to help people with LGBTQ families gain the rights, recognition and respect that every family deserves.
