Synopsis:
In a time when LGBT families are debated and attacked in the media, courts and Congress, from school houses to state houses across the country, five young people give you a chance to walk in their shoes – to hear their own views on marriage, making change, and what it means to be a family.
About the project:
This 31-minute documentary film was directed by Jen Gilomen and produced by the COLAGE Youth Leadership and Action Program during a 10-month activism training program in San Francisco, CA. In My Shoes is an excellent tool for raising awareness and making the case for same-sex marriage in schools, community centers, churches, legislative offices and more. This film debuted on June 16, 2005 at a world premiere event in San Francisco and at the 2005 Framline Film Festival, where it earned the Audience Award for Best Short.
Quotes from audience members:
- From a parent: "It's not just a youth film; it's a GOOD film."
- From a middle school teacher: "This is the most poignant and compelling argument for gay marriage I've ever seen!"
- From a 12-yr old son to his lesbian mom:"Did you hear what that boy [in the film] said? That's how I feel!"
- From an 17-year-old boy who has no LGBT family or friends: "I felt like I got to be a part of their families for a little while, to see what it's like."
- From a reform Rabbi: "Wow! That 16-yr-old girl [in the film] just went off on her county supervisor. She's articulate and she's got chutzpah!"

"In My Shoes is an earnest, traditional 30-minute documentary focused on the children of same-sex couples. Told through the eyes and voices of the kids, it turns the political gay-marriage issue into the personal by showing that these are happy, well-adjusted kids being raised by caring adults."
