Today is World AIDS Day

Today COLAGE Commemorates World AIDS Day, by remembering those we have lost and all those we must still fight for. Many of the founders of our organization and COLAGE members have lost parents and loved ones to AIDS and HIV related illnesses. We celebrate their lives and the legacy they have left behind.
On this particular World AIDS Day, we reflect on the progress made on the federal level such as President Obama lifting the discriminatory ban on travel and immigration to the United States by HIV-positive individuals and the recent signing of the reauthorization of the Ryan White HIV Treatment Act ensuring that life-saving care and services will continue to be available to people living with HIV/AIDS. The Senate began debating the health care reform bill this week and we hope it will retain the House provision that makes people with HIV eligible for Medicaid coverage earlier in their illness.
Yet, much work remains in order to truly address the AIDS epidemic. We need funded public education campaigns, federal funding for syringe exchange programs, and more progressive laws to protect individuals with HIV and AIDS and their families. We look to our membership to help us continue this work- your stories and experiences continue to be a powerful antidote to fear, hatred and oppression as COLAGE continues to help children of LGBTQ families gain the rights, recognition and respects that every family deserves.
